James “Jim” Glen Garoutte, 71 passed away Saturday, February 4, 2017 at his home in Rushville, MO. Jim was born February 17, 1945 in St. Joseph, MO to Glen Theodore and Mary Hellen (Matthews) Garoutte. He was a 1963 graduate of the DeKalb, MO High School. Jim married Mary Elaine Mitchell on April 6, 1974 at the First Christian Church of Atchison, KS; and they resided in Atchison afterwards. He later lived in the Ferellview School House on Bysol Hill, where he attended school as a child, before moving to his current home in Rushville, MO. Jim worked as a core maker for Bradken Mfg. (formerly Atchison Casting) for 44 years. In his youth, he was a talented bowler, as a league member in Atchison, where he won many awards and trophies. He was proud of his garden, and enjoyed raising livestock, including raising and selling rabbits. After his retirement, Jim enjoyed making 406 nameplates for his friends. He loved Karaoke, especially the songs Distant Drums and Farewell Party; and sang along with Marty Robbins songs. Known as “Big Jim” by his friends, he was proud of the recordings he had of his singing. He was preceded in death by: his parents; a sister Beverly Foster; and a son Shawn Garoutte. Jim is survived by: his wife of 43 years, Mary of the home; his sons Daniel and Travis Garoutte of Platte City and Weston; his grandchildren Alexus, Jaden, and Ava Garoutte; his sisters Carol Barnes of Atchison, and Sue Trautloff of Excelsior Springs, MO; his brother in law Dean (Gloria) Mitchell of St. Joseph; and his nephews Ryan and Nick (Megan) Mitchell. A visitation will be held 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at Vaughn Funeral Home in Weston, MO. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 8, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the Sugar Creek Cemetery in Rushville. The family suggests contributions be given to The American Cancer Society.
