Obituary for Mack Owen Newby

Mack Owen Newby, 94, passed away Friday, October 2, 2015 at home in Camden Point, MO. A private graveside service will be held at the Platte City Cemetery, at a later date. The family suggests contributions be given to the St. Luke’s Hospice. Mack was born September 14, 1921 in Kansas City, MO to Merritt Owen and Mary Gladys (McCleery) Newby. He was raised in Kansas City, and was a graduate of Paseo High School. Mack received his B.S. from Kansas City University (now called UMKC). He served his country in the Navy during WWII. He went to midshipman school in 1941, and was an Ensign aboard the USS Lexington CV16 from 1943 to 1946. After his military service he was a metallurgist and later a division manager for Armco Steel Sheffield Works, Kansas City, retiring after 30 years with the company in 1978. After retirement Mack purchased Riverview Ornamental Iron. In the 50’s and 60’s Mack competed in road ralley races; driving several models of cars including: a 120 Jaguar, T3 Triumph, Giulietta Alfa Romeo, and a Corvette Stingray. When asked how he did he replied “Young man, I placed every time I drove!” He also raised Black Angus cattle, hogs and saddle bred horses. He was an active stockholder of the Platte County Fairgrounds Association, and an active member of the Greater Kansas City Carriage Club. In 1967 he married Martha Marilyn Hoskins and to this union were born 2 sons, Mark Newby and his wife Nancy of Platte City, MO, and Nathan Owen Newby, who preceded him in death. Mack was also preceded in death by: his parents; his wife Martha Marilyn Newby; brothers William and John Newby, and a sister Sara Newby.
