Obituary for Gilbert J. "Pops" Wilhelm

Gilbert J. “Pops” Wilhelm, 87, of Platte City, MO, passed away Monday, January 30, 2017 at St. John’s Hospital in Leavenworth, Kansas. Gilbert was born May 14, 1929 in Kelly, KS to Alphonse Joseph and Barbara Mary (Berger) Wilhelm. He served in the United States Army during World War II. In his younger days, Gilbert enjoyed farming 500 acres a year. He later worked in the hospitality industry as a restaurant manager at the airport Hilton and as head of security and maintenance for the Ramada Inn in Leavenworth. He married Ruth Henderson on May 12, 1981 in Leavenworth, Kansas. They lived in Ferrelview, Missouri for over 20 years before retiring to Platte City. He was a devout Catholic, loved to fish, and absolutely worshipped all of his grandchildren. Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents; four children, John, David, Gilbert, Jr., and Sharon; and sister Jeanette. He is survived by his wife Ruth, of the home; sons Cole and Roy; daughters Shirley, Eileen, Dee, Crystal (Carl), and Ruth (Denny); sisters Mary, Beatrice, Cecilia, and Laura; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Graveside services and inurnment with military honors will be held Tuesday, February 7 at 12:30 pm at Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth, KS.
