Martha Jean Pepper, 89, left this Earth to go to her Eternal home on September 5, 2017. Born February 16, 1928 in Rushville, MO, she was the eldest daughter of Alice Hargrove and Byron Lawrence. To those that knew her well, she was known as Jean. She married Harold Wayne Pepper on December 15, 1950 at the First Christian Church in St. Joseph, Missouri. Shortly after they were married, Harold went overseas to serve in the Korean War. In the years after his return, they were able to start a family with the addition of two sons, Dan and John. They lived on the Pepper family farm for more than nearly 30 years where Harold and Jean spent most of their lives working the homestead. After Dan and John were grown, Jean and Harold moved to Atchison for a short period of time where Jean worked at the local hospital in the dietary department before retiring. Harold and Jean were married for almost 62 years before Harold’s passing in October 2012. Jean is preceded in death by her husband Harold, her parents Alice and Byron Lawrence, and long-time beloved pet cats Teetle and Peanuts. Jean is survived by two caring sons, Dan Pepper and wife Kris of DeKalb, MO, and John Pepper of Kansas City, MO. She has four grandchildren, Rachel Pepper and Jason Loar of Platte City, MO, Hannah Thornton and Matt of St. Joseph, MO, Matt Pepper of Kansas City, MO and Ben Pepper of Kansas City, MO. She also has one step great granddaughter, Aubrey Thornton. She is also survived by her two sisters Margaret Bishop and Jane Ann Cox. The family will receive friends on Friday, September 8, 2017 at 10 a.m. at Vaughn Funeral Home in Weston, Missouri followed by a funeral at 11 a.m. to celebrate her life. Interment will be at Mount Bethel Cemetery, Weston, Missouri. Memorial donations may be made to Salem Christian Church.
