Obituary for Mary Ellen Wingerd (Book)

Mary Ellen (Book) Wingerd , age 82, died of lung cancer on June 30, 2020, at St. Luke’s North Hospital in Kansas City, MO.
Mary Wingerd is survived by her husband Eldon Wingerd of Weston, MO, by her three sons Greg Wingerd (wife Lisa) of Victorville, CA, Daryl Wingerd (wife Jenny) of Weston, MO, and Loren Wingerd (wife Karen) of Ontario, CA, by twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and by five siblings, Orrin Book (former wife Alta) of Upland, CA, Allen Book (wife Mona) of Upland, CA, John Book (wife Sharon) of Montreal, MO, Anita (Book) Wingert (husband Don) of Mechanicsburg, PA, and Loine (Book) Turner (husband Jeff) of Glendora, CA. She is preceded in death by her brother Jerel Book (wife Fran) of Mt. Joy, PA.

Mary Ellen Book was born on April 3, 1938 in Pasadena, CA to parents Chester Arthur Book (born 1908 in Dickinson County, KS) and Eva Brandt (Oberholtzer) Book (born 1905 in Dauphin County, PA). Mary graduated from Upland College, CA in 1960 with a B.A. in Education, and earned her California teaching credential. In 1961 Mary and Eldon moved to Morrison, IL where Eldon was the pastor of Morrison Brethren in Christ Church. In 1964 the family relocated to Sunnymead, CA when Eldon accepted the pastorate at Sunnymead Brethren in Christ Church. Mary participated in ministry at both churches by teaching Sunday School and playing the piano. Eventually, Eldon became a full-time elementary school teacher and Mary focused her attention on making a wonderful home and childhood for their three boys, although she did some occasional substitute teaching to help with the finances. Mary and Eldon stayed in California until 2013 when they moved to Weston, MO to be near their son Daryl and his family.
Mary was extraordinarily involved with her family, and loved nothing more than spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was most happy when reading to the little ones, exploring the natural world outside with them, attending their sports, school, music, and church events, and planning special gifts for the next birthday. Mary was devoted to Eldon and looked out for his needs for almost 61 years of marriage. As a couple, they spent the long summers camping and traveling with the boys, and they also devoted countless hours to music lessons and other activities. Above all, Mary loved her Savior, Jesus Christ, and placed her hope for eternity in the promises given in the Bible.
Mary Ellen Wingerd will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her. She is laid to rest at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Weston, MO.
