Obituary for John Robert Plank

John Robert Plank 83, of Platte City, MO passed away February 13, 2021 at the North Care Hospice House in Kansas City, MO. John was born July 11, 1937 in Mitchell, KS to Marvin David and Pearl Lucille (Babcock) Plank; moving to Coldwater, KS at the age of 2; and spent most his life in Southwest Kansas. He was a graduate of Friend’s Academy in Haviland, KS. John married Joyce Marie Ellis on December 21, 1957 in Hugoton, KS. He was a member of the Bethel Friend’s Church of Hugoton, KS; and after retiring to Platte City in 2002, he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Platte City. John served as a board member of Barclay College in Haviland, served as Stevens County Commissioner, and was a member of the Hugoton Lion’s Club. He was owner/operator of Plank Auto Repair in Hugoton, where he was known as a great auto mechanic; and also worked for Anadarko Gas Company. John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Joyce; and sisters Ellen Winters and Dorothy Bukhall. He is survived by his children Michelle (Scott) Nordyke of K.C., MO and Melinda (Bobbie) Campbell of Johns Creek, GA; his grandchildren Nicole (Sean) O'Hern’ Ceara Matsuda, Dylan Campbell, and Erin Campbell; great granddaughters Roslyn, Charlotte and Corinne O’Hern, and Ellacy Matsuda; his sisters Barbara Bindord and Phyllis Kinser; and many nieces and nephews. Following cremation, a memorial service with inurnment will take place at the Hugoton Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions can be given to Barclay College—607 N. Kingman—Haviland, KS 67059. John will be remembered for his love and dedication to his family, larger than life personality, story-telling, and his extensive license plate collection. He was a farm boy at heart and helped many farmers during harvest season over the years, participated in antique tractor shows, and enjoyed hunting.
