On Saturday, April 17, 2021, Barbara Ann “Bobbi” Whitters Dennis, 57, passed away suddenly at her home in Platte City. Bobbi was born on November 17, 1963 in Smithville at Spelman Hospital, to Paul Risdon Whitters and Barbara Bills Whitters. The youngest of five children, she conveniently (or inconveniently depending on your perspective) arrived on a Sunday, interrupting Bonanza on television. Regardless of this little controversy surrounding her birth, she quickly became the spoiled, darling “brat” of the Whitters clan. It is true that the youngest child often gets away with havoc, and Bobbi was evidence of that. Whether she was disappearing on neighborhood explorations at age 3, getting her head stuck between the wrought iron bars on our front porch in her birthday suit, or matter-of-factly announcing to her older sister’s boyfriends that her sister wasn’t wearing a bra (it was the 70’s folks), she was our much loved “brat”. Bobbie was her mother’s dream daughter, spending hours in the kitchen with Mom cooking. She was a talented cook and always brought our old family recipes to the Thanksgiving or Christmas table. She was also a very talented artist, winning a statewide award during her senior year of high school. But her passion was gardening and landscaping; flowers, vegetables, you name it, she could grow it. The garden was her happy spot. She spent many hours hunting for just the right river rocks and items to put in her flower beds or to save because of her interest in nature. Among her garden activities, Bobbi, along with her partner David, hauled several loads of large, heavy red stones from Kansas and built a nice wall in the backyard, making space for a garden. She also enjoyed walks in the woods and hunting for morel mushrooms with David when they came into season. Bobbi’s legacy is in her sons whom she loved deeply and passionately as only a mother does. We know this to be true as she didn’t have an athletic bone in her body, yet she enthusiastically volunteered to coach soccer when no other parent stepped up. If that ain’t love, we don’t know what is. Andrew Paul Dennis, her first born son lives in Spokane, Washington having recently served in the USMC and graduating from Northwest Missouri State University. Her second child, Christopher Kenneth Dennis lives in Platte City, MO where he is building a career. Bobbie left us far too early. We take comfort, however, as she has been reunited with our Mama, who predeceased her and between the two, we have some pretty fierce guardian angels looking out for us. Bobbi was the youngest of five children, siblings who were competitive and generally did quite well in their school activities. She probably nurtured a need to more than prove herself. She did so quite well. Bobbi approached any activity she was assigned or was asked to participate in, with humility regardless of how well she contributed, or did. Her manners and approach to meeting and dealing with people she knew, or complete strangers, was of the highest level. Her work ethic was unsurpassed. In Bobbi’s last years, she excelled in taking care of her father’s home and gave him her full attention. She served her father as a wonderful companion. According to her father, Bobbi will be truly missed. She will not now receive, and enjoy, the accolades she may surely have earned along life’s way. Barbara Ann was preceded in death by her mother Barbara Bills Whitters and her grandparents. She is survived by her two sons, Andrew and Christopher, her partner David Schrage of Platte City, MO, her father Paul Whitters, also of Platte City and the rest of the clan she had wrapped around her little finger; brothers Rob Whitters (Kathy), Greg Whitters (Deborah), Jim Whitters (Pam) and sister, Susan Sartain (Jack.) She is also survived by numerous nieces, great nieces and great nephews. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Rollins Funeral Home, Platte City, MO, under the direction of Galen Gould, director. Visitation will be held 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM with a Memorial Service following at 11:00 AM. Inurnment will follow at Platte City Cemetery at the intersection of 4th Street and North Street. In lieu of flowers, and because of Bobbi’s love for nature, may we suggest planting a tree in her honor, donating to A Living Tribute (alivingtribute.org) supporting national and community reforestation efforts, or perhaps a donation to a local garden club or charity of choice.
