Obituary for Mark Cogan

Dennis Mark Cogan, age 67, of Weston, Missouri, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2022, with his wife Sheri by his side, at St Luke’s Hospice Home, Kansas City, Missouri. Mark was one of the kindest individuals anyone could ever know and had a pure heart. Mark was born July 18, 1954, at the Atchison Hospital, Atchison, Kansas, and the fourth child of Jack & Bertha (Meier) Cogan. Jack was born in 1927 at the Rees Farm, in the Bean Lake, MO area and Bertha was born in Atchison, KS. Mark attended Lakeview Elementary School, Bean Lake and West Platte High School, Weston, graduating in 1972. Growing up with loving parents and his siblings on the family farm, prepared Mark for hard work and dedication to his family. He attended and was baptized at Short Creek Baptist Church. As a teen he belonged to DeMolay, dedicated to preparing young men to lead successful, happy, and productive lives. He married Cindy Schaback, at the Weston Methodist Church, in 1974. To that union his son, Ryan Cogan and daughter, Erin Cogan was born. Mark was a member of the Weston Jaycee’s and Weston Masonic Lodge #53. On March 9, 1996, he married the love of his life, Sheri Powers. To that union he gained step-daughter’s Jeanette and Stevie. Mark’s early career was with Lasater’s Men’s Clothing Store in Atchison for many years where he helped Jack Higley assist men in the area to look their sharpest, a habit Mark practiced the rest of his life. From Lasater’s, Mark worked for Braniff Airlines a short time before transferring to Boeing in Wichita, KS. When Fed Ex started expanding into the Midwest area, Mark worked at the first Fed Ex shipping location at 17th and Washington St. in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. Mark transferred to the current FedEx Ramp Center at the Kansas City Airport, where he held a 32 year career. A man of integrity, Mark was highly thought of by those he worked with locally! Mark always showed great respect for the employees and used opportunities as a teachable moment when called for. Over the years Mark was privileged to meet several founders of special organizations that FedEx shipped for, such as Gary Sinise & his Foundation that honors our defenders, veterans, first responders and their families. One time Mark got to fly with a pilot in a tanker-refueling aircraft; which was an experience of a life time! Mark took several family members to Ireland, especially his mother who accompanied him twice. He always said “I feel like I’m at home when I’m in Ireland”! He and Sheri retired together and have enjoyed traveling back to Ireland, Texas for winter fishing & Florida for the sunshine. Managing the Cogan’s Cove Cabin in Colorado Springs was his piece of heaven on earth! Hunting for mushrooms on the Cogan family farm, fishing, and being a fantastic cook brought his family much joy! Mark will be thought of every Christmas Eve, his favorite time to entertain the entire family, with his famous Mac & Cheese and Lobster Bisque. He was a perfect Elderberry Jelly maker! He held Chief’s season tickets for 34 years and received his “Cogan” jersey in 2013, as a Thank You for being a season member! But most of all spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren gave him pure joy! Mark donated to the Wounded Warrior Project and Shriner’s Hospital for Children. Mark is survived by his wife Sheri of the home; son Ryan & grandchildren, Kane, Rya and Raven; daughter Erin and granddaughter, Madison (Trey) Miller; step-daughters, Nettie and son Elim, and Stevie (Jeff) Shatto, and grandson’s Lucas & Jack. He is survived by three sisters: Carol and Larry Lintner, Joyce and Mike Burch, and Kathleen and Pat Pickman; and four brothers: Mike and Lois Cogan, Chris and Susan Cogan, Tim and Lori Cogan, and Brian and Kelly Cogan; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Mark is predeceased by his parents, his twin baby brother Daniel, and baby brother David. Though we have lost one, God has a good friend at his side in Mark Cogan. The memories will live forever! A visitation will be held 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., Saturday, March 12, 2022 at First Baptist Church of Platte City; followed by a 1:00 p.m. funeral service. Interment will follow at Mount Bethel Cemetery, Weston, Missouri. Memorial contributions can be made to Mt Bethel Cemetery Association.
