His mother died when he was four and he and his sister Peggy, went to live with their grandparents in Sturgeon, MO. The family moved to Platte City in 1939 when his father married Edith Mae Miller. Gene graduated from Platte County High School in 1948. He enjoyed telling stories about his football team when they wore leather helmets with no face masks. He went to the University of Missouri in Columbia where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He made many lifetime friends there. Gene also started a sandwich business out of his dorm room. They would go to sororities in the evenings and sell their sandwiches during the lady’s study break times. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Platte City. He had a great group of friends, many of whom have passed before him. He really enjoyed stopping in at “The guys group” at Bill Brown’s office.
